 Just Date and See!

by Portia MacIntosh

Blurb

Billie is looking forward to a quiet, man-free Christmas. It’s just a shame her family doesn't feel the same way…

With a house full of unexpected (and unwanted) guests, Billie needs to find the perfect escape to get away from the chaos.

So when her dating app recommends a week of singles nights in her area, Billie decides that braving these events has to be better than making conversation with her dad’s new wife, dealing with her mum's mid-life crisis or witnessing her sister flirting with her insufferably arrogant next-door neighbour.

While this is definitely not the festive season she had planned, between disco bowling and boozy bingo, little does Billie know that she may find love this year after all - she'll just have to date and see...

Fall in love with the perfect laugh-out-loud festive read from top 10 bestseller Portia MacIntosh.

My Review:

Just Date and See by Portia MacIntosh was an unexpected Christmas novel surrounding Billie and her wild, unconventional family.
Billie is an English teacher and was looking forward to a quiet Christmas with her mother recently moving into her renovated home but it seems the guests are not stopping there. No, her sister Jess, father and stepmother turn up to move in for Christmas and she was not happy.
To escape a chaotic household, Billie signs up for the dating app Matcher that's doing a week-long event leading up to Christmas for mingling. She meets Rocco, who warned her about a sleazy man she was speaking with and escapes with him, mutually agreeing to help each other survive the chaotic events. The two end up getting along and meeting up becomes less of a chore.
If everything that could go wrong in Billie's then it has. Her frustrating ex Declan shows up, her sister starts seeing the creepy neighbour Kenny, her parents have some weird flirty relationship and put that all together they take over her home.
The start was really funny, I loved to banter between Billie and her teacher friend. It was also nice to see a book character that had a good relationship with her mother and even have insight into modern-day dating and the trials and tribulations this created.
I did become infuriated towards the end. Billie was supposed to be a secondary school teacher but she showed 0 authority and backbone in any aspect of her life, letting almost everyone walk all over her. I think a smaller, less personally challenging career choice would make more sense or if she was more confident in what she did and did not want. It got to the point I was getting mixed up with the plot about her family life and the romance plot and then the two combined and became even more infuriating. I love the cover, but you would never know it was a Christmas romance novel.
I think if you're looking for a kooky family dynamic where a heroine has buckets of bad luck trying to navigate festive activities then this is great.
Thank you Boldwood!

The Book of Azrael by Amber Nicole review

The Book of Azrael (Gods and Monsters #1) by Amber Nicole ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. At this point in time I have no words for this book. Ok that was a lie. I have a lot to say.  I had a general idea of what this book entailed but I prefer to go in blind and appreciate the unexpected, and this paid off. I absolutely loved it. Initially, Dianna is this evil monster capable of awful things and her one weakness is her sister, Gabby. I thought Kaden would be this love interest that would shift completely due to his love and affection for Dianna but boy was I wrong. Once the plot got underway and I grasped the complex world of gods and monsters, I was hooked. Liam - or Samkiel - was an instant favourite for me. A tortured soul, isolated and grieving is shoved into a stressful situation that is constantly developing and worsening. The two main characters form an initially volatile alliance which burns super slowly into a delicious and spicy romance that A...
